Swimming

Clearance

If you did not participate in a Fall sport at Ashland High School, please stop by the Athletic office to be sure you are cleared to participate. No swimmer will be allowed in the pool without clearance - no exceptions.

Practice Times and Expectation

We swim at Daniel Meyer pool in Hunter Park in Ashland:

Due to maintenance at Daniel Meyer, we will swim at the Ashland YMCA for the first two weeks of 2023 practice:

  • November 13 through 17

  • November 20 through 22

  • All practices at the Y are 7:00 - 8:30 PM.

Ashland YMCA pre-registration information (not needed if you played water polo); please fill this out in advance and submit to the YMCA, or bring filled out to the first practice:

All team members will need to be in the YMCA system so that they can check in each time that they attend practice. Those who are already members will check in as normal. For those participants who do not have YMCA memberships, fill out the short form (PDF) or go online to the Ashland YMCA website and click "Member Login" then "Sign Up" on the new page and start the process as a "Participant". An adult needs to be on file as the "Primary of the participant account".

After Thanksgiving, practices will be at Daniel Meyer Pool:

  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 3:30-5:00 PM

  • Tuesday and Thursday, 4:00 - 5:30 PM

Daniel Meyer is outdoors, but the locker rooms and water are heated. Swim caps and shower shoes are recommended for all swimmers to help stay warm.

I expect swimmers to get to the pool as soon as they can once class is finished to be in the water promptly. I will have practice wrapped up on time so swimmers can be out of the locker rooms promptly for pickup. We will not practice on Saturday or Sunday. We will, however, have a few meets that fall on weekends (see schedule for details).

I know there will be circumstances outside of the athlete's control that may keep them after school on some days. As with any planned or unplanned event that will keep the swimmer from participating, I would ask that you make your best effort to contact me as soon as possible. If they are meeting with a teacher, I would like a note. If they are ill or have a doctor's appointment that cannot be scheduled outside practice times, then I would like some sort of communication from parents.

Due to the shared nature of the pool, it is extremely important that swimmers respond when asked to begin or end the workout(s). I will do my best to build in social time, goal discussion time, meet discussion time, and general team building time. When we are at the pool, and the workout has been presented, it's time to swim.

To earn a varsity letter in swimming, swimmers must attend at least 4 practices per week, a majority of meets prior to Districts, and score points at the District meet (points are only scored in finals, on the second day of the meet).

Important Dates:

  • First day is 11/13

  • Thanksgiving (no practice) is 11/23 and 11/24

  • Springfield Relays (first meet) is 12/1

  • Winter Break Daily Doubles are 12/18 - 12/22

  • 5A League Championships is 2/9 and 2/10

  • 5A State Championships is 2/16 and 2/17

We will do our best to take as many swimmers as possible to away meets, however seating is limited and we may have to limit our numbers somewhat.  I will communicate clearly to the swimmers if/when they are not going.  Otherwise, all swimmers should assume they are traveling with the team (JV swimmers included).

Parent Volunteers:

Volunteer positions open this year:

  1. I need someone to coordinate water and snacks (healthy choices they can eat before, during, or after) on meet days with other parents. Snacks for athletes at each meet are extremely helpful, especially on trips to Eugene when we need to leave early in the morning

  2. We'll need a small group of parents to take on the end of year social/banquet.

Equipment:

All swimmers are to provide for themselves a practice suit and goggles. We will provide hand paddles, fins, kick boards, and pull buoys for the team to use. We are offering a team store again that each swimmer will be able to order from. There will be a required competition suit for both men and women to purchase (see below).

Team Suits

We have a unified team suit design again this year, which can be ordered from Ryte Sport at the beginning of the season. See the website for ordering and cost details. Sweatshirts, shirts, towels may also be ordered there, if desired. These are the suggested team uniform items. We will have a fit kit for try-ons at the pool during the first few days of practice.

If ordering a team suit from Ryte Sport is not feasible, you may order from our SwimOutlet store. Please note the guidelines below:

Although the suits shown come in various color options, please select the Red versions for each. You may choose any style suit you prefer for competition that is RED, one-piece, and does not have zippers, ties, or large printing/logos (all are illegal for competition--including mens' and womens' water polo suits). The one exception is school-specific printing (e.g. logo, school name, school nickname) that is built into the suit, not applied after construction. Additionally, only one suit may be worn at a time during competition; plan accordingly.
